Are you the outstanding junior or established researcher in the field of Molecular Plant Pathology with a collaborative mindset, intellectual curiosity and passion for teaching? Then we are looking for you to strengthen and complement the research profile of the Molecular Plant Pathology group of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS).

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated research talent to develop an independent research program in a well-equipped environment. Research within Molecular Plant Pathology is focused on pathogenic interactions of fungi, bacteria and viruses with plants and the molecular mechanisms underlying plant disease resistance. Candidates with experience in plant-bacteria interactions are encouraged to apply.

What are you going to do

You are expected to:

  • be active in fundamental and applied research in plant-bacteria interactions, publishing in high level international journals, presenting at leading conferences and supervising PhD students and postdocs;
  • take part in teaching and organizing courses primarily in Biology and Biomedical Sciences programs at the Science Faculty. This also includes supervision of bachelor and master internships;
  • be active in attracting external funding, including personal grants;
  • contribute to an environment of mutual support in the Green Life Sciences cluster and in SILS.

What do we require

  • a PhD in Molecular Plant Pathology or a closely related field;
  • a strong scientific expertise in plant-bacteria interactions, reflected among others in publications as first or senior author in international journals;
  • a demonstrated ability and willingness to teach at Bachelor and Master level;
  • a proven ability to attract external funding or fellowships;
  • willingness to foster collaborations with academic and/or industrial partners;
  • fluency and excellent communication in English, both written and spoken (level C1); non-native Dutch speakers must be willing to obtain A2 level proficiency in the Dutch language. You are expected to acquire sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three years of the start of the employment contract.

Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed assistant professors follow a didactic training trajectory, which upon completion results in a qualification for academic teaching (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years.

We will base our selection and the tasks we will assign you, on your scientific track record and on your vision for future research, as well as on your teaching qualifications and overall work experience. The assigned tasks will determine whether you will be appointed as an assistant professor or associate professor.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours a week, for a period of 18 months. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2022. A permanent contract follows if we assess your performance positive.

Your salary, depending on your relevant work experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €3,821 (scale 11) up to a maximum of €5,943 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position as Assistant Professor or from € 5,294 (scale 13) up to a maximum of € 7,079 (scale 14) gross per month for a full-time position as Associate Professor, in line with the CAO of the Dutch Universities. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. A favorable tax agreement, the 30% ruling, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
