What are you going to do?

 

You will join the Department of Media Studies and you will provide education in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods. You will be a part of the research-led teaching team in Archival and Information Studies & Digital Humanities. Your research will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and the Data Science Centre (DCS). ASCA is one of the five research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research.

 

ASCA is home to more than 100 researchers and more than 140 PhD candidates and conducts world-leading research in Cultural Analysis. ASCA researchers share a commitment to studying culture in all its forms and expressions within an interdisciplinary framework, and to maintaining a close connection with contemporary cultural and political debates. All ASCA research fits into at least one, but usually more than one of five thematic constellations: 1) Mediality; 2) Arts & Aesthetics; 3) Globalization & Migration; 4) Identities; and 5) Cultural & Social Critique.

The Data Science Centre is a new cross-Faculty institution at UvA that aims to enhance the university’s research by developing, sharing and applying data science methods and technologies. As a coordinating hub within the UvA Library, the centre is uniquely positioned to facilitate knowledge exchange as well as the training of skills related to digital and data-driven research and thus contributes to the innovation, diffusion and cross pollination of data science across the university. The candidate will enhance the existing team of humanities researchers at the DSC.

 

Tasks and responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this position is expected to develop a critical humanities research agenda in data studies/data science with a specific focus on cultural data analysis. Both in research and teaching, the aim is to examine societal challenges of data studies, such as the role of bias in algorithms and artificial intelligence or questions of transparency and opacity. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in working with digital data in particular domains, including social media and health, but who are also open to well-justified applications from other domains.  

 

The new assistant professor will work interdisciplinary, across departmental and disciplinary boundaries, and support the development of existing and new curricula and programmes. You are especially expected to contribute to the research activities of ASCA and DSC, working with both humanities scholars and data scientists to understand, contribute, and develop new cross-disciplinary workflows and research practices. Moreover, you will participate in setting up national and international research networks and actively pursue external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, both national as well as European. 

 

The selected candidate will develop, teach, and organise courses in the BA programme Media and Information and the new MA programme Cultural Data & AI. This includes the supervision of BA and MA theses, tutoring students, and co-supervising PhD theses. You will actively contribute to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes and take part in committees and working groups, carrying out departmental administrative tasks as requested.

You are a dynamic and ambitious researcher with a strong profile, demonstrable by international publications and an international academic network. Your publications and other research outputs show that you can cover cultural data research questions from a critical humanities perspective. You are able to develop research in a quickly expanding international field and develop specific content questions of fairness and ethical behaviour working with human data.

 

You are able to develop and provide modules in cultural data analysis with computational methods. Important is proven flexibility in teaching on topics beyond your own research focus, a willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams of teachers and the ability to offer inspiring lectures and tutorials in the BA, (R)MA and minor programmes that aspire to a wide range of students.

 

Your experience and profile:

  • holds a PhD the humanities, social or information sciences with a relevant research focus in the critical analysis of data processes;
  • has an international academic network in the research area concerned;
  • provides research output commensurate with the level of the position;
  • is an active and ambitious researcher with a strong publication record;
  • demonstrates ability and ambition to obtain external research grants;
  • has broad and relevant teaching experience at BA and MA level;
  • has excellent command (near-native fluency) of both Dutch and English. An active and passive command of Dutch must be acquired within two years of the employment contract and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed;
  • has experience with digital and audio-visual teaching facilities and affinity with IT in university teaching;
  • has experience in valorisation and practice-based education and/or research;
  • is a good team player and versatile at all levels, capable of multidisciplinary co-operation;
  • has excellent organisational experience and skills;
  • has acquired the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification, or is willing to acquire this within the first two years.

 

Research that entails collaboration with non-academic institutions and agencies in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond is highly welcome.

 

What can we offer you?

 

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months with a probationary period of two months. If you already have an employment contract with the UvA, we offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months. The employment is for 38 hours per week. Preferred starting date is 01 February 2023.

 

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week, ranges between € € 3,974 (scale 11) to € 5,439 (scale 11) dependent on relevant experience. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
