Introduction
To strengthen and complement the research profile of the Microbiology Research Theme of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS), we are looking for an outstanding researcher with an innovative mindset and intellectual curiosity. The research within the theme is focused on three main areas: Microbiomes, Microbial infections & food stability, and Biotechnology & Synthetic biology.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated research talent to develop an independent research program in a well-equipped and highly supportive environment. All research areas within Molecular Microbiology are considered, but candidates with research interests in bacterial host cell interaction of Gram-negative pathogens and/or advanced next generation sequence (NGS) techniques, such as Hi-C, are especially encouraged to apply. You will establish your own research program within the Microbiology theme, ideally with national or international collaborations.

What are you going to do

You are expected to:
•    develop an independent research line within the research area of Molecular Microbiology;
•    be active in the fundamental and/or applied research of our Microbiology Theme of SILS, publishing in high level international journals, presenting at

     leading conferences and supervising PhD students;
•    teach and organize courses, primarily in Biology, Biomedical and Psychobiology (Life Sciences) programs at the Science Faculty and with biomedical

     partner institutes at Amsterdam UMC. This also includes supervision of bachelor and master internships;
•    be active in the attraction of external funding, including personal grants;
•    be open to collaborations with other members in the Microbiology theme and SILS.

What do we require

  • a PhD in Molecular Microbiology or a closely related discipline;
  • a strong scientific expertise in a relevant area of Bacteriology, reflected among others by publications as first or senior author in highly respectable international journals;
  • a demonstrated experience in and dedication to teaching at Bachelor and Master level;
  • a proven ability to attract external funding or fellowships;
  • a willingness to foster collaborations with other academic partners;
  • fluency and excellent communication in English, both written and spoken (level C1); non-native Dutch speakers must be willing to obtain A2 level proficiency in the Dutch language. You are expected to acquire sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three year of the start of the employment contract.

Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed assistant professors follow a didactic training trajectory, which upon completion results in a qualification for academic teaching (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years.

We will base our selection on your scientific track record and on your vision for future research, as well as on your teaching achievement, qualifications, and vision on future teaching. We invite inspiring researchers who can push forward their original views and project ideas in the context of a highly competitive academic research environment to respond.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours a week, for a period of 18 months. The preferred starting date is 1 July 2022.  A permanent contract follows if we assess your performance positive.

Your salary, depending on your relevant work experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €4,629 to €5,943 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. A favorable tax agreement, the 30% ruling, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
