The Department of Anthropology is one of the largest departments of anthropology in Europe with an excellent reputation in both research and teaching. The Department currently has an opening for an assistant professor of Anthropology with a specialization in visual anthropology.

 

What are you going to do

 

As assistant professor and member of the department you will actively contribute to the broad and diverse teaching and research profile of anthropology in Amsterdam.

 

You will:

  • publish articles and monographs and to participate in international research networks, including conferences and workshops;
  • develop and coordinate courses in the field of anthropology generally and in visual anthropology in particular;
  • teach general, specialist and methodological courses in the BSc-, MSc, Research Master’s- and PhD-programs of our department, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • develop, carry out and supervise anthropological research at a high academic level;  develop a line of research in collaboration with junior staff members and other researchers working at the department;
  • acquire and help to acquire external funding for research (also alongside junior researchers);
  • engage in activities in the public sphere and in other arenas outside academia;
  • carry out administrative tasks.

 

What do we require of you

 

You have:

 

  • a PhD degree preferably obtained not more than six years ago;
  • a strong general knowledge of the field of anthropology;
  • a strong proven record in visual anthropology and/or industry experience;
  • a proven record of high-quality teaching at BSc and/or MSc level, and experience in teaching technical skills in visual anthropology;
  • a strong track record in ethnographic research;
  • the potential to acquire research funding from external sources (e.g. Netherlands’ Organization for Scientific Research, the European Research Council, or other research councils, European Union, or other national and international funding agencies);
  • a commitment to public anthropological engagement with non-academic actors;
  • excellent knowledge of spoken and written English;
  • the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification or Senior Teaching Qualification (or foreign equivalents), or the willingness to acquire such a qualification fairly soon after employment commences;
  • working proficiency in the Dutch language or the willingness to develop it within the first two years of employment.

 

 

Our offer

 

We offer an employment contract of 30,4 to 38 hours per week for a period of 18 months. Following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances, you will be offered a permanent contract. The intended starting date is 1 September 2022.

 

The gross monthly salary based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week ranges from a minimum of €3,807 up to a maximum of €5,211 per month (salary scale 11). The starting salary will be based on relevant experience. We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
