Are you interested in research practices and the broader field of privacy and open science? Would you like to help researchers understand and incorporate the best and most up-to-date research practices? And do you have an affinity with Communication Research? Then look no further, as The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is seeking a data steward.


We are looking for someone with good knowledge of and enthusiasm for research data management and the broader field of privacy and open science. Someone with a passion for supporting scientific staff, and affinity with the field of Communication Science.


As a data steward, you advise researchers on research data management, including how to collect, store, and securely share research data. In doing so, you are in close contact with the university’s legal department to discuss the judicial aspects of certain research projects and collaborations. You also work together with the data stewards of the other domains within the faculty and the institute’s ethical review board. In addition, you will provide courses for students and researchers on data management and the FAIR principles.


Finally, if time permits, you will also assist in broader research management tasks, such as overseeing the development of new PhD-projects and the accompanying recruitment process, the training process of PhD’s, and the evaluation of research budget requests.


What are you going to do?


Vertaling in het Engels. You are the first point of contact for researchers for all questions regarding research, including the storage and sharing of research data, privacy and information security matters.  


You will/tasks:

  • You support researchers in project/data management of the research
  • You will help researchers draw up data management plans in accordance with institutional protocols and European laws and regulations (GDPR)
  • You support researchers in drawing up legal agreements for collaborations and data sharing
  • You support in making research data publishable (where possible and desired) in accordance with FAIR principles and Open Science principles
  • You provide information about GDPR and research data management within the communication science department
  • You contribute to the development of policy in the field of research data management
  • You stimulate and monitor whether defined policies are implemented
  • You evaluate the risks of research projects using the tools developed for this purpose (i.e., DPIA risk analysis) and advise on measures that can mitigate existing risks.
  • You will create awareness and provide support in launching the new Research Management Services Portal
  • You will support ASCoR’s research manager and scientific director with other research management-related tasks


What do you have to offer


You have:


  • Interest in scientific research and the research process, and in particular in issues such as FAIR data and Open Science
  • Affinity with the field of research data management or privacy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent and demonstrable administrative and organizational skills
  • Excellent command of English. Proficiency in Dutch is a plus
  • A degree in Communication Science (/a related field), or a law degree

  • Interested in learning about institute-wide research projects and solving the accompanying challenges
  • Organized, flexible, and with attention to detail
  • Able to work independently, and you have a pro-active attitude
  • A team player who is good in working with a variety of people from different fields


What can we offer you


We offer an employment contract for one year with a probationary period of two months, preferably starting on January 16th 2023. The employment contract is for 38 hours a week. Following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances, you will be offered a permanent contract. We will put together a curriculum which will also include the opportunity to attend training courses.


Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €2.960 - €4.670 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours (Scale 10). This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
