Junior Researcher in Private International Law

The Asser Institute invites applications for a Junior researcher in Private International Law (0.4 FTE) to contribute to the (EU-funded) project “Private international law in motion – PAX 3.0”.

PAX 3.0 combines a number of educational and training activities to ensure a better understanding and application of the main EU legal instruments in the area of civil justice. In short, it seeks to ensure that the project consortium further develops and expands students’, academics’ and trainee judges’ knowledge on major recent developments of EU private international law, through moot courts and judicial trainings respectively.

Established in 1965, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut is an independent and internationally renowned research centre in international and European law, affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. The Asser Institute’s mission is to contribute to the development of international and European public and private law. We achieve this by:

• Independent legal research: We conduct fundamental, policy-oriented, and applied legal research in international and European public and private law.

• Knowledge dissemination: We initiate and facilitate academic and expert meetings, (professional) education, and public events aimed at disseminating knowledge of international and European public and private law. We further share our legal knowledge by adding to the public debate.

What are you going to do?

Tasks and responsibilities:

Your main tasks & responsibilities will include:

• contribute to comparative research (collecting, grouping and classification of data, case law and case studies);
• contribute to moot case monitoring (compilation of relevant cases, elaboration and review of cases based on EU regulations and international conventions);
• contribute to knowledge exchange and dissemination (academic articles, dissemination of information into regular channels of communication and events, blogs & social media);
• engage actively with the Asser research community.

Your profile and skills

The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

• Completed LLM in private international or/and private European law;
• Enthusiasm to contribute to a stimulating research community;
• Organisational and communications skills;
• Writing and speaking fluency in English;
• Professional working proficiency in Dutch is a plus.

Our offer

We offer an appointment for 15.2 hours a week (0.4 FTE) for the period of one year and a half with a probationary period of two months, preferably starting from 1 January 2025. Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience, and knowledge, and amounts to a minimum of € 3,345 and a maximum of €5,278 gross per month for full-time work, excluding a holiday allowance (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) is applicable. The UFO Salary scale 10 applies to this position. A temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates. You will be employed by the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law, but seconded to the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague. Only candidates with permission to work in the Netherlands will be considered.

The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is a research centre in international and European law, based in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice.
